01/ Overview
The route
The border with Austria runs along the mountain peaks between Schesaplana and Sulzfluh. Directly below, the high-level hike leads across steep alpine pastures on the southern slope. The far-reaching views over the Prättigau and the mighty, bare limestone cliffs attract climbing enthusiasts from all over the world.
The stage begins at the Schesaplanahütte on the southern flank of Schesaplana. The starting point is some distance from public transport; the nearest stop, Eggli bei Fanas, is around 5 km away. From the hut, the mountain trail, marked white-red-white, climbs steadily across open alpine pastures. As it gains height, the terrain becomes rockier and the landscape more barren.
By Gafalljoch, the long ascent is almost complete. Shortly afterwards, the route reaches its highest point at around 2,260 m near the Kirchlispitzen. From there, the high-level trail continues through the Rätikon in a steady succession of ascents and descents. Over the 16 km, the route involves around 950 metres of ascent in total; the walking time is just over five hours.
Towards the end, the mountain trail leads across Carschinafurgga to Carschinahütte. The destination lies below Sulzfluh and offers views into the St. Antöniertal. Here too, the stage ends some distance from public transport: the nearest stop, St. Antönien, Bärgli, is around 2.5 km away.

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
There may be snow on this hiking trail. Bring appropriate gear and plan accordingly.
How we check: SLF only publishes its snow maps from November 1. Until then we roughly estimate the snow depth at the lowest and the highest point of the route every day from the nearest SLF measuring stations. Check the situation on site.
