01/ Overview

The route

Discover the wildly romantic side of winter high above the Ägerital valley on the highest snowshoe trail in the canton of Zug, traverse snow-capped forests, and gaze out on the Säntis from the Central Swiss Alps.

The snowshoe tour starts directly at the 1,077 m pass from the Alosen, Raten bus stop. The five-kilometre circuit initially climbs gently through open terrain. Meadows and pastures shape the landscape, interspersed with damp hollows and areas of moorland.

The route climbs higher in a broad arc. After about an hour, it approaches the highest point at around 1,160 m. Shortly afterwards, the Bellevue viewpoint lies directly on the circuit. By this point, well over half the route has been completed before it turns back towards Raten.

The return route crosses open terrain, with a few short uphill sections along the way. In total, around 170 metres of ascent must be tackled, and a little over two hours should be allowed for the circuit. Finally, the route descends to the pass and ends back at the Alosen, Raten bus stop.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • Snowshoeing is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.

How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
