01/ Overview
The route
The path along the embankment begins at Ottenbach, on the border between the cantons of Aargau and Zürich. This elevated path runs alongside the River Reuss to Rottenschwil and reveals magnificent views of a beautiful natural environment.
From the Ottenbach, Engelwiese bus stop, the hike initially leads through the village. Before long, the houses give way to open fields and meadows. The route starts at its highest point, at around 420 m, then descends almost imperceptibly towards the Reuss valley. Waymarked hiking trails alternate with sections outside the official hiking trail network. There are no significant climbs along the six-kilometre route.
The broad agricultural landscape also characterises the second part. With no appreciable differences in elevation, the trail continues towards Rottenschwil and ends after just under an hour and a half near the Flachsee. Around 1.4 kilometres long, the lake forms the southern part of the reservoir on the Reuss and covers 72 hectares. This makes it the second-largest lake located entirely within the canton of Aargau. The destination is just a few steps from the water; the Rottenschwil, Hecht bus stop is also very close by.
