Rottenloipe

The flat terrain of the Rottenloipe runs from Oberwald through to Niederwald, passing through the picturesque high valley of Obergoms and along the young Rhône. The trail is lined with thick protection forests and snowy white peaks.

From the Oberwald VS, Dorf stop, it is only a few steps to the start of the 18-kilometre cross-country ski trail. At around 1,370 metres, this is already its highest point. The route then heads down the valley, with a few short climbs, across the open expanses of Obergoms to Obergesteln.

Beyond the village, the terrain remains broad and open. Around Geschinersee, the trail continues down the valley and later passes through the Reckingen area; the Geisgadi eatery lies directly on the route. It then crosses wide meadows to Ritzingen and Biel. Open countryside dominates between the villages, while the descent is spread evenly along the valley.

In the final third, open stretches alternate with the houses of Bodme and Blitzingen. After a total of just over four hours, with around 240 metres of descent and 100 metres of climbing, the trail ends in Niederwald, around 100 metres from the stop of the same name.
