01/ Overview

The route

A steep start and a long border trail: this circular hike from Luthern Dorf leads along the ridge between Ahorn and Napf to Ober Scheidegg, then returns to the valley through meadows and forest.

From the Luthern, Dorf PostBus stop, the circular hike initially leads out of the village. The ascent via Nesslisboden and Chatzerschwand is steep, following little-known paths through alternating meadows and forest. Higher up, the route reaches the ridge between Ahorn and Napf. It follows the crest along the border trail; the «Seppi a de Weggere» memorial barbecue area commemorates folklorist Josef Zihlmann.

By the Naturfreundehaus Aemmital, more than half of the four-hour hike has been completed. Shortly afterwards, the highest point is reached near Ober Scheidegg at around 1,200 m. The trail then gradually descends via Dürregütsch and Ober Hirsenegg. Open pastures once again alternate with stretches of forest before the first houses appear in Hirsenegg. The final section continues down into the valley, completing the circuit after just over twelve kilometres at the PostBus stop in Luthern Dorf.

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
