01/ Overview
The route
Gentle hills, fields and Lucerne hamlets characterise this circular hike from Menznau to Soppisee. The trail leads directly to the lakeshore and through the peaceful Soppiseewald.
From Menznau railway station, the circular hike initially climbs out of the village into the open, hilly countryside. After just under one kilometre, it reaches its highest point at Buechehübeli, at around 670 m. The hiking trail then continues through fields and farmland, passing farms and hamlets. It leads via Elswil to Geiss, with the option of a detour to the Landgasthof Ochsen.
Beyond Tambach and Schwanden, the route loses some elevation before climbing through the Soppiseewald to Soppisee. The trail leads directly to the shore and then around the lake. Its sediments serve as a climate archive, while Mesolithic archaeological sites make it nationally significant. Swimming is prohibited in the nature reserve.
From the lake, the route climbs to Buholz and continues across the gentle uplands near Buechen. Close to the route lies the small Tuetisee, whose shores and wetlands are protected. The trail returns via Wermelingen and Seeburg, between meadows and fields, to the first houses of Menznau and the railway station.

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
