01/ Overview
The route
A winter hiking paradise around the small mountain farming village of Habkern, at the foot of the Hohgant and Sieben Hengste peaks, where eagles and lynx dwell. This area, also the source of the Emme River, offers a wealth of impressive views.
The roughly four-kilometre winter hike starts at the Habkern, Post bus stop in the heart of the village. Gasthof Bären is close to the route right at the start. The trail then leaves the houses behind and climbs across open terrain. Between meadows and forest, the circular route gains a total of around 130 metres in elevation.
After just over a third of the route, it reaches its highest point near Twiri at around 1,140 m. From here, the route descends again, initially through a quiet succession of open areas and forest. Further on, the houses of Bolsiten come into view; there, the trail curves back towards Habkern.
Towards the end, the trail descends to the lowest point of the route before leading back into the village. After around one and a half hours, the winter hike ends back at the Habkern, Post bus stop.
