01/ Overview

The route

The winter hiking trail leads almost entirely downhill from Marbachegg to Marbach, crossing open uplands and woodland, with views of the Bernese High Alps and the Schrattenfluh.

The winter hike begins at the Marbachegg mountain station, reached from Marbach by the Bretzeli-Bahn gondola lift. At around 1,470 m, the highest point of the route is right at the start. Near the mountain restaurant, panoramic views open up towards the Schreckhorn, Finsteraarhorn and Eiger, while the Schrattenfluh and Schibegütsch remain in view on the other side. Passing the reservoir, the winter hiking trail descends across the open slopes of Lochsitli and Oberlochsitli.

The long descent continues via Wittenfärren and Nesselboden. Meadows and pastures alternate with stretches of woodland, and farther down the first houses draw closer. At Bühl, the Lourdes Grotto can be reached on a short detour. The route then follows the Schonbach for a while through the residential area. Passing the parish church of St Nicholas, the trail leads into Marbach. The finishing point is some distance from the nearest public transport stop; Marbach LU, Dorf is around 500 m away.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
