01/ Overview

The route

Located above the winter sports resort of Malbun, the Sassweg is the most popular winter hiking trail in the Principality of Liechtenstein. It leads gently uphill and offers beautiful views of Malbun and the surrounding area.

This roughly five-kilometre winter hike starts in Malbun, away from public transport; the nearest stop, Weite, Lonna/Heuwiese, is just over eight kilometres away. From Malbun, the route initially climbs through woodland. As the elevation increases, the trees give way to open terrain and the steady ascent continues. In total, the route gains around 280 metres in elevation.

About halfway round, the route reaches its highest point at just under 1,800 m. It then turns back and gradually loses elevation. It descends across open ground and later through woodland once more, before reaching its lowest point on the final section. From there, a gentle ascent leads back to Malbun, where the roughly two-hour winter hike ends.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • Winter hiking is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.

How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
