01/ Overview
The route
The last section of the Schanfigger Höhenweg is full of contrasts: sun-drenched mountain meadows, pretty Alpine huts, steep ravines and wild mountain streams. The tour offers lovely views and leads along the hills of the Schanfigg valley basin down to Maladers.
The hike begins at Skihaus Hochwang at around 1,950 m, also the highest point of the route. The starting point is away from public transport; the nearest stop, St. Peter Triemel, is around one kilometre away. The mountain hiking trail initially descends gently across open pastures. A few short counter-ascents add up to a total ascent of around 440 metres along the 13-kilometre route.
At Bargun and Lafet, the route skirts small settlements before entering the forest for longer stretches. The descent remains the defining feature, dropping almost 1,450 metres in total. Sturdy footwear and sure-footedness are required for the trail, which is marked white-red-white throughout.
Towards the end, the landscape opens up again towards the village of Maladers. In the historic village centre, the route passes directly by the Reformed church, which is protected as a cantonal monument. A little later, the hike of just over four hours ends at the Maladers, alte Post bus stop.

Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
There may be snow on this hiking trail. Bring appropriate gear and plan accordingly.
How we check: SLF only publishes its snow maps from November 1. Until then we roughly estimate the snow depth at the lowest and the highest point of the route every day from the nearest SLF measuring stations. Check the situation on site.
