01/ Overview
The route
There is a lot to discover on this hike to Lake Schwellisee: besides other things, you will find a lovely mountain lake and the cultural highlights of Arosa.
The winter hike begins in Innerarosa at the Arosa, Gada bus stop. The Bergkirchli, Arosa’s oldest church and its oldest surviving building, stands near the starting point. The route initially climbs gently between the houses, soon leaving the village behind. It continues at a steady pace across broad, open slopes, passing Alpenblick. The route then climbs further, reaching its highest point at around 1,970 m after just under two kilometres. By this point, the total ascent is around 150 metres.
The route now descends in a wide arc. Schwellisee, situated at 1,931 m, lies slightly off the route but forms a striking feature in the open landscape. Open ground then alternates with the first houses of Innerarosa. After around four kilometres and just under an hour and a half, the circular hike ends back in Innerarosa, a few steps from the Arosa, Gada bus stop.
