01/ Overview
The route
The winter hiking trail between Andermatt and Realp runs along the Reuss through the valley. It takes you past Hospental with its distinctive Tower of the Lords and then through the smallest village in Switzerland.
The winter hiking trail begins on the edge of the village at the Andermatt, Bodenstrasse 1 stop. Leaving the houses behind, the route climbs gently westwards across the open valley floor. After around three kilometres, Hospental lies off to one side of the route, with the Tower of the Lords of Hospental visible above the village. Beyond it, the surroundings soon become quiet and expansive once more.
The winter hiking trail continues up the valley with gentle ascents and descents. The settlements recede behind, open meadows dominate the view, and the modest elevation gain is spread over almost the entire route. Towards the end, the route passes directly by the Steinbergen chapel. From there, it is not far to the first houses of Realp. After nine kilometres and just under three hours, the trail reaches its highest point at around 1,540 m on the edge of the village. Passing Astrid's Bistro, it continues to the nearby Realp, Post stop, where the winter hike ends.
