ViaRhenana, Stage 6/10

The Rheinuferweg links the towns of Eglisau and Kaiserstuhl with the market town and place of pilgrimage of Bad Zurzach, passing bridges, power stations and bunkers. An idyllic water-meadow landscape lies on the Rhein river between Lienheim (G) and Mellikon.

From Eglisau railway station, the approximately 21-kilometre hike begins at its highest point, at around 390 m. The broad hiking trail leaves the town and continues through woodland and across open meadows and fields, with gentle ups and downs. Despite around 400 metres of ascent, the gradients remain moderate; a good five and a half hours should be allowed for the entire route.

Kaiserstuhl is reached about halfway along the route. The Alte Post fish restaurant lies directly beside the trail. On the opposite bank of the Rhine, the 16th-century St. Antoniuskapelle and Burg Rotwasserstelz stand above the riverbank on a coral reef outcrop.

The alternation of woodland, open farmland and villages then continues. The trail leads via Rümikon and Mellikon to Rekingen, gradually losing elevation overall. The final kilometres remain on the flat valley floor and end at the first houses of Bad Zurzach, immediately beside the railway station.
