01/ Overview

The route

A tranquil upland moorland, alpine pastures and open woodland accompany the circular hike to Chlus. Towering above it all is the rugged north face of the Schrattenfluh.

The circular hike starts at Wagliseiboden in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Entlebuch. The actual trailhead is some distance from public transport; the nearest stop, Sörenberg, Rischli, is around two and a half kilometres away. At first, the trail loses some elevation before the mountain path climbs across alpine pastures and through open stretches of woodland. Wet meadows, stands of birch and moorland plants characterise the tranquil upland moorland at the foot of the Schrattenfluh.

At Chlus, the route reaches its highest point at around 1,780 m. From here, the view takes in the striking north face of the Schrattenfluh. The trail then descends to Alp Schlund, passing directly by the Alpwirtschaft Schlund. Open pastures once again alternate with stretches of open woodland.

The return route follows a small alpine road, gently rising and falling through the moorland. Near Wagliseichnubel, the route turns back towards the starting point. After around nine kilometres and just over three hours, the circular hike ends back in Wagliseiboden.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
