Walserweg Safiental

From Versam to deep inside the Safien valley, experience the beauty and variety of a natural and cultural landscape. Each step takes you ever closer to the peace, tranquillity and seclusion as you immerse yourself in the Walser culture of past and present.

The long mountain hike begins at the Versam, Grosshus bus stop. The mountain trail leaves the houses of Versam behind and climbs steeply through alternating woodland and open meadows. The Maiensässbeizli Imschlacht mountain inn lies directly on the route. Higher up, the terrain becomes more open; the highest point is reached at the Tenner Kreuz, at just over 2,000 m.

The trail then descends to the sunny high plateau of Tenna and passes through Innerberg. Beyond the Egschi reservoir lies Neukirch, one of the small villages in the Safiental. Here, the route passes the heritage-listed Reformed church. Stretches of woodland, open slopes and scattered houses characterise the rest of the route to Safien Platz.

From Safien Platz, the mountain trail once again heads further into the valley and gains elevation. It continues in a steady series of ascents and descents across the slopes near Camanaboda to Thalkirch. The Reformed church, with its cemetery enclosed by an exposed-stone wall, stands directly on the route. The final stretch of just under two kilometres leads to Turrahus and the nearby Thalkirch, Turrahus bus stop.
