01/ Overview

The route

Relaxing winter hike with a view – there are no challenging ascents to overcome on this tour. Nevertheless, it offers magnificent views across the sunny plateau and the Valais mountains, including the Matterhorn.

From Bettmeralp station, the winter hike initially leads through the village. At the St. Michael centre, it gradually leaves the houses behind and climbs to Bettmersee. The mountain lake lies at 2'009 m above Bettmeralp, with the terrain opening out along its shores. The route then continues uphill across broad slopes, while the 2'289 m Sparrhorn towers above the surrounding landscape.

Around halfway along, the winter hiking trail reaches its highest point at approximately 2'070 m. Shortly before this, the Scheenebodu reservoir lies directly beside the route. A long, gentle descent across open terrain now follows before the first houses of Riederalp draw closer. In the village, the trail passes Tea Room Zurschmitten and continues through the built-up area. After a total of six kilometres and just over two hours, the hike ends at Riederalp Mitte station.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • Winter hiking is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.

How we check: SLF only publishes its snow maps from November 1. Until then we roughly estimate the snow depth at the lowest and the highest point of the route every day from the nearest SLF measuring stations. Check the situation on site.
